The Campaign to End Medicaid Estate Recovery is Active!
We’ve reported and wrote on the destruction of Medicaid Estate Recovery (MER) does to families and communities since 2024. That is when Congressional Representative Jan Schakowsky introduced the Stop Unfair Medicaid Recoveries Act . In January she reintroduced the Bill. You can read about it here
Medicaid Estate Recovery means that if any Elder receives any assistance from Medicaid, whether in the Hospital, nursing home or their own home, Medicaid will wait until death and then inform the family that their parent ran up a big Medicaid bill. One local Elder Law attorney reported that he was dealing with a $600,000 claim! MER is a “death tax” for working families who need a little help financing health care.
Today’s Good News is that the National Academy of Elder Law attorneys has organized a national campaign to work with the members and other senior advocates to change MER policy — and to see a day when no one faces losing a family home simply because their loved one got the health care they needed.
