How do I choose an Elder Law Attorney?

How do I find an experienced Elder Law attorney?

You may judge the attorney by her/his professional associations.  The attorney must be a member of the  member of the State Bar Elder Law section. In Michigan it is the “Elder Law and Disability Rights” section.  The attorney should be a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.  Finally it is best if the attorney is a Certified Elder Law Attorney.  You may visit the website https://www.nelf.org/attorney-directory-search  to find one.

If you find you need additional research You may inquire as to whether the lawyer has had articles published in the field of elder law. Does the lawyer have a blog? Has the lawyer written on his or her website?

The final test is your comfort with the lawyer. No matter the credentials, if you don’t feel comfortable, move on. You will find a lawyer that you can trust with your important family matters.
